Results for 2011
Saturday the 28th of August marked the end of Saturday morning junior rugby for children that play in the Waikato Central Junior Rugby (WCJR) competitions. The WCJR board looks after over 2,000 rugby players from 4 to 14 years old, who play in 160 teams across 9 different grades. The lower grades, 6th to 11th are termed non-competition, while the older grades, 11th to 13th are broken into several pools and games are played for various trophies. The culmination of the seasons games took place on Saturday morning when many of the finals were played at Stan Heather Park.
The final of the 11th Grade Pool A and HRU Cup game was between Te Awamutu Sports Scorpions and Hamilton Marist White. TA Sports Scorpions capped off an unbeaten season and took home cup with a 22-7 win over Marist. In a similar manner in the 11th Grade B pool, Southwell also had an unbeaten season and took out the final 24-0 against Hamilton Old Boys. In Pool C Taupiri also completed an unbeaten season by winning against Ohaupo in their final.
The 12 grade competition is perhaps the most competitive of all the grades. The 12th grade pool A final was played between Hamilton Marist Green and Hamilton Old Boys Black. The final was a fine display of rugby from the two finalist teams, in what had been a very competitive and tight competition all season. The first half was dominated by Marist, however Hamilton Old Boys came back strongly in the second half to close the margin considerably. Hamilton Marist managed to hold out a determined opposition to win the championship game 17-14 and received the K. Dormer Cup.
Raglan, having been dominant all season, went down 35-5 to Kihikihi in the 12th Grade pool B final.
In the 13th grade the top Hamilton team Fraser Tech played against the top Waikato Wide team SURF. Fraser Tech must have has some confidence going into the game having won the WCJR 13th grade Deighton Memorial Cup the previous weekend, at Fraser Tech by 38-27. However this weekend, playing for the Aaron Hopa trophy, with different eligibility rules, and the game played at Tokoroa, SURF were able to turn the tables. SURF won the game 24-12 and managed to retain the Aaron Hopa trophy for another year.
In the 13th grade Pool B, a series of round robin games were played and Pirongia came out on top with Matamata Magpies finishing 2nd in this pool.
Despite some issues with weather early in the season 2011 has been great season for junior rugby. The organisers would like to take the opportunity to thank all the parents, coaches, managers, administrators and WCJR delegates who have made this season possible and allowed a whole lot of children to get a whole lot of joy out of the great game of rugby. Special thanks also to the WRU for all their assistance to junior rugby in the Waikato.
