Representative Rugby Details

Overview for 2011

In general there are three types of representative teams that WCJR players are involved with; children that are under 75kgs, children that are under 55kgs, and children that are under 45kgs. All children in both divisions must be 12 years or under at the 1st of January and must not be attending a High School, though they made be attending an intermediate school.

The Under 75kgs representative teams is a new initiative that began in 2009 and will have two teams entered from WCJR in 2011. The teams will enter the MacKenzie Cup tournament which will be played over consecutive weekends in May (more details below).

The Under 55kgs representative teams begin with the Gwynne Shield teams who play in a tournament that takes place in the first week of the July school holidays. The teams play every day of the first week with the finals played at Waikato Stadium on the Sunday. Two representative teams are selected from the Gwynne Shield teams; the Rangers and the Rovers team and then from these teams a final team is selected to represent Waikato at the Roller Mills tournament in September/October.

For more details on the Roller Mills tournament see: www.RollerMillsRugby.co.nz

The Under 45kgs representative teams begin with the Goord Cup teams. Four teams are created from the WCJR clubs based in Hamilton and play each other in a tournament over two Sundays in June. From this tournament two further teams are selected called Hamilton Gold and Hamilton Black, for the Bowers Cup tournament. The Bowers Cup tournament is played in August, further details are below. From the Bowers Cup tournament a further team is selected called the Goldfields team who then go on to play in the Goldfields tournament (called called the Invitation U45 Tournament).

Note: eligible children can play in either the MacKenzie Cup teams, the Gwynne Shields teams or the Goord Cup teams but not in more than one representative division. This rule is to give as many of our children as possible the chance to play represenative rugby.
